Walmart is offering customers access to their health information through a free digital wallet, according to a press release. Users can then decide whether to use this wallet to share their health info, beginning with their COVID-19 vaccination record.
This program lets people store their vaccine records in their Walmart or Sam’s Club online pharmacy account, and then print it, share it or save it to a device. It is open to anyone over 18 who was vaccinated for COVID-19 at a Walmart/Sam’s Club pharmacy or a Walmart-sponsored event.
“The vaccine record is a free digital version of the vaccine cards issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), including the individual’s name, date of birth, date of vaccination, vaccine manufacturer, vaccine lot number and location where they received the immunization, so people no longer have to worry about losing their paper copy,” the company said in the release.
Customers can log into their Walmart/Sam’s Club account and request a QR code of their record in a few steps. The program is open now to Walmart users and should expand to Sam’s Club members next week. Walmart also said it will add new functionality that lets families bundle their records and access the records of children under 18.
Walmart uses the SMART Health Cards standard from the Vaccination Credential Initiative, which means the digital vaccine record can be shared with other compatible services, adhering to all HIPAA privacy rules. This includes the Health Pass from CLEAR and the free CommonPass and CommonHealth apps from the nonprofit Common Project Foundation, per the release.
