Delta, Capital One, UPS, AT&T Among Victims Of Widespread Internet Outage

Delta Air Lines, British Airways, Capital One, Go Daddy, Vanguard, UPS, LastPass, AT&T and Costco were among the websites loading slowly or showing “DNS failure” in what CNBC called “a widespread outage” across the World Wide Web Thursday (July 22).

Content distribution network Akamai, which helps data move around the internet, said it had fixed the issue at 1:09 p.m. E.T., which had to do with its Edge DNS (domain name system) service.

Cloud service provider Oracle, meanwhile, said earlier that it was “monitoring a global issue related to Akamai edge DNS that is impacting access to many internet resources, including Oracle cloud properties.” The outage doesn’t affect resources within Oracle’s cloud service.

The outages are localized in some cases, which means not everyone is unable to access the sites.

“We’re experiencing temporary technical issues serving our customers on delta.com and the Fly Delta mobile app,” said a message on Delta’s website. “We apologize for the delay, and are working to restore the site as quickly as possible.”

Last month, Fastly detected a software bug that caused an outage and that most of its network was back to running normally within 49 minutes. News and government websites went down amid the outage. The sites were down for approximately an hour starting at 6 a.m. Eastern Time on June 8.

The company “began a software deployment” on May 12 “that introduced a bug that could be triggered by a specific customer configuration under specific circumstances,” said Senior Vice President of Engineering and Infrastructure Nick Rockwell in a blog post. Then, early on June 8, a client “pushed a valid configuration change that included the specific circumstances that triggered the bug.” Fastly then “created a permanent fix for the bug and began deploying it” later that day, according to Rockwell.

The company was implementing the fix for the bug throughout its network “as quickly and safely as possible,” he said at the time.

Fastly and PYMNTS worked together on “The Optimized API: How Edge Cloud Technology Transforms FI’s API Performance,” examining how consumers are accustomed to the simplicity of a click, unlocking engaging, interactive experiences on retailer, brand and entertainment sites, and they expect the same from their financial institutions. Speed and security is especially important to maintain, though.
