Sales for China’s smartphone Xiaomi escalated 26 percent, effectively booting Samsung and Apple out of their top spots, according to media reports.
The sales for Xiaomi marked the first time a Chinese smartphone vendor climbed to the top of the list, per data from Counterpoint Research.
In June, Xiaomi became the fastest-growing smartphone brand, with a 17.1 percent global market share. Comparatively, South Korea’s Samsung captured 15.7 percent of the market for smartphones sold. Apple, meanwhile, had 14.3 percent of the market in that region.
“Ever since the decline of Huawei commenced, Xiaomi has been making consistent and aggressive efforts to fill the gap created by this decline,” Tarun Pathak, research director at Counterpoint, said in a statement.

Since then, Pathak said that Xiaomi has made inroads into territories previously dominated by Huawei — China, Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Analysts from Counterpoint have pointed to the recent rise in COVID-19 cases in Vietnam as being part of the reason Samsung in particular has had trouble keeping up with the demand for its smartphones, parts, and accessories, essentially indicating that Xiaomi’s results could be a fluke.
