The immortal James Brown once chided us all to “get up offa that thing.”
Since we’re in polite company, “that thing” in this case is whatever you’re sitting on.
It’s all about movement, people. Blood flow. Circulation. Dynamic tension. Charles Atlas, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sarah Robles — take your weightlifting pick — but lift something. Do reps.
We think you get it. From the look of PYMNTS latest Provider Ranking of Fitness Apps, a great many of you are downloading all the right apps for that South Beach look. But downloading burns no calories and build no muscles.
Enough with the fitness shaming. We just care so very much. To prove it, we’ll lift these rankings right over our heads as if they were weightless.
Full disclosure: they are weightless. Don’t obsess on details. Let’s run down this ranking.
The Top 5
Lots of changes this cycle, starting with a new No. 1, and that would be the MyFitnessPal app. We’ve watched it patiently rise through the rankings, putting in the work. They look great.
More gain, more gain as they don’t say at the gym. Yet we’ve got two gainers at No. 2 this time out, those being Planet Fitness Workouts (up a spot) and Strava: Run, Ride, Swim (up a spot).
Proving our point about weightlifters, Workouts By Muscle Booster gains one spot of lean body mass to take No. 3 this cycle. Maybe if they did more dumbbell hammer curls …
Stepping down three chart positions from No. 1 last month we’ve got Sweatcoin Walking Step Counter at No. 4, but staying in the Top 5, which is always a victory, even when sweaty.
You don’t get far without a good coach, which helps explain our new No. 5, the Fitness Coach & Diet: FitCoach app, entering the Top 5 for the first time. Welcome. Try a protein bar. Our treat.
The Top 10
Dropping down to the Top 5’s of tomorrow, we begin with a tie.
At No. 6 and No. 6, respectively, it’s FitOn Workouts & Fitness Plans wedged in with the Runkeeper — GPS Running Tracker app. FitOn fell a spot; Runkeeper rose three. Way to be.
Jogging up one chart position (we feel they could’ve gone longer) it’s Map My Run By Under Armour taking No. 7.
The Nike Training Club is down a spot to No. 8, and that’s just doing it (as far as we can tell).
Daily Workouts Fitness Trainer rises one spot from last month, so well done you.
At No. 10 we welcome a newcomer (or a returnee…we can’t remember), and it’s the Sworkit app which we’re guessing is a phonetic contraction of the phrase “just work it.”
Don’t you love an app-based play on words? Obviously we do, but we’re easily amused.
Now, “get up offa that thing” for at least 30 minutes at least three times a week.
