In its presentation Tuesday (March 8), Apple unveiled several new developments as part of its new product rollout, including a new Mac desktop and display, a new iPhone and a new chip.
The tech giant introduced its Mac Studio and Studio Display, which are intended to give users an updated way to build their studios. The company also said this will allow users to do things like render “massive 3D environments” and playing back 18 streams of ProRes video.
According to the company, Studio Display will come with a 27-inch 5K Retina display, a 12MP Ultra Wide camera and high-fidelity speakers.
Apple also announced the new iPhone SE, which it said will come with new features including A15 Bionic, which “powers advanced camera capabilities and makes nearly every experience better, from photo editing to power-intensive operations like gaming and augmented reality.” The water-resistant iPhone SE, which comes in three colors, also has 5G, a longer battery life and features Touch ID.
According to Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing, the phone’s 5G capabilities will offer faster downloads, better video quality and real-time interactivity in apps.
Apple also unveiled M1 Ultra, which is the next phase for Apple silicon and the Mac. It will come with UltraFusion, the packing architecture interconnecting the die of two M1 Max chips to make a system on a chip with better performance levels and capabilities.
The company said this will add to computing power for the new Mac Studio, and will have quality performance per watt.
“M1 Ultra is another game-changer for Apple silicon that once again will shock the PC industry,” said Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Technologies. “By connecting two M1 Max die with our UltraFusion packaging architecture, we’re able to scale Apple silicon to unprecedented new heights.
“With its powerful CPU, massive GPU, incredible Neural Engine, ProRes hardware acceleration, and huge amount of unified memory, M1 Ultra completes the M1 family as the world’s most powerful and capable chip for a personal computer.”
Apple also announced two new colors for the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 — alpine green and green. Bob Borchers, vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing with the company, said they wanted to give customers “even more options” when choosing a phone.
PYMNTS wrote that Apple’s plans for 5G capabilities have seen analysts predicting it won’t really make a massive difference.

“We probably won’t see big geography shifts,” analyst Ryan Reith of IDC said ahead of the presentation. He added that the SE will likely be around 10% of iPhone shipments around the world after its launch.
Other reports say 5G tech isn’t usually good enough to make much of a difference yet, though it will evolve in the next year or so.
