Facebook parent company Meta Platforms has teamed up with computer hardware firm AMD on a mobile infrastructure program to develop multiple Evenstar radio units (RUs) and expand the 4G/5G global network.
The Evenstar program, which is led by Meta Connectivity, aims to create metaverse-ready radio access network (RAN) reference designs for 4G and 5G networks, the Wednesday (May 11) AMD press release said.
Evenstar RUs with AMD’s radio technology allow users to deploy 4G/5G, mmWave and sub-6GHz from the same foundational hardware, which means radio vendors can react quickly to new market opportunities, according to the AMD press release.
“The development of Evenstar radios with our adaptive radio technology inside is a significant achievement for AMD,” said Dan Mansur, vice president, data center and communications group at AMD.
Citi’s new “Metaverse and Money: Decrypting the Future” report said 5 billion people — more than half the world’s population — will be accessing the metaverse’s 3D immersive virtual reality, resulting in an economy of $8 trillion to $13 trillion.
That user count includes everyone going into the metaverse in two dimensions on mobiles, game consoles and laptops, with 1 billion getting the truly immersive metaverse experience with virtual- and augmented-reality goggles.
Citi expects a range of currencies to be included in the metaverse, encompassing both digitally native tokens including stablecoins, cryptocurrencies and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) along with “traditional forms of money,” including credit cards and Apple Pay/Google Pay wallets. Decentralized finance, or DeFi, will coexist with traditional financial systems.
