Password Boss said Thursday (July 23) that it is debuting a free password manager and digital wallet “designed for anyone who has trouble remembering their passwords.”
The company said it is offering the only free app that allows consumers to “store an unlimited number of passwords, choose where their data is securely stored and share any items in their account with anyone they choose.” The app is able to be downloaded across Windows PCs and tablets, as well as Android and iOS mobile devices.
The company cited a Harris Interactive survey of more than 2,000 U.S. adults that found that 92 percent of those surveyed do not use a password manager tied to passwords for online accounts. Of those questioned, 63 percent said they attempt to memorize the passwords, with 43 percent stating they actually write them down on paper. And a slight majority, or 54 percent, say they should indeed change their password habits.
Steve Wise, the founder and of Password Boss and its chief executive officer, said in a statement that “despite the fact that four of 10 companies were hacked in 2014, most of us continue to use and reuse crackable passwords that are easy to remember, store passwords in unsafe places and rely too much on clicking ‘forgot password’ links.”
“As consumers, we want things to be easy. That’s why we created Password Boss. By securely storing personal information and synchronizing it across all devices, Password Boss is the easiest way for people to safely login to websites, access their accounts and shop online.”
In terms of features, the company noted its Password Vault, what it termed “bank-grade security” and a Digital Wallet offering automatic form fills. Data can be shared with family members and friends.
For the Password Vault, Password Boss said users need to remember only a single password, with unique names and passwords automatically filled in by the app across any login screens. Encryption is used at the 256-bit level, the company said. For the Digital Wallet, online payment choices can include credit card or PayPal accounts, also with automatic data fill.
Consumers are also able to choose where geographically they would like to store and encrypt data.
