Tapingo Amps Up University Mobile Commerce Revenue

Tapingo, the mobile app that focuses on ordering goods and services, said Monday (Aug. 3) that it is bringing deliveries from on-campus venues — such as meal halls — to off-campus customers.

In the announcement, the company said its new service, named “Tapingo Delivers,” will “unlock prime markets” for food programs that are traditionally found on campus. Tapingo said its new features will allow expanded reach to upperclassmen and higher education staff members, who tend to live off campus. The company said it will use its already extant scheduling technology and Tapingo Couriers to bring food to those new customers.

Founded three years ago, Tapingo has linked up with more than 90 campuses throughout the United States and Canada to bring its mobile services to students. The company has said that its delivery helps merchants boost sales and keep operating costs lower. The app integrates with POS providers Micros and Simphony, among others, and card providers such as Heartland and NuVision. Tapingo has estimated that it processes “tens of thousands of transactions” daily and that the average user employs the service five times a week.

In the release detailing the off-campus initiative on Monday, Tapingo said it solves a “key problem by leveraging existing” on-campus dining establishments.

“Tapingo Delivers is helping us overcome the challenge of extending dining services throughout our tech-savvy student body,” Todd Millay, University of Arizona’s assistant director of retail and contract management, said in the release. “By handling 100 percent of the technology, staffing and overhead, Tapingo is making all this possible with minimal input on our end.”

Tapingo’s push across higher education comes on the heels of a $22 million financing round that was announced in April of this year. The investment, geared toward expansion, was led by Qualcomm Ventures, DCM Ventures and Kinzon Capital.
