Google+ Brings Consumer-Curated ‘Collections’ To iOS

The Google+ social platform’s Collections feature is now available to iOS users, the company announced yesterday (Aug. 31) in a blog post.

Now, even more users will have the ability to curate their Google+ social feeds with images and conversations specific to their interests, based on the Collections they create and/or follow.

With Collections, users have the ability to gather and share their thoughts, photos, videos and links from around the Web, based on a wide variety of topics, everything from homebrewing to video games, TechCrunch reported.

The new rollout of Google+ Collections on iOS comes at a time when Google is changing its approach to its social platform. What was once geared to establish itself as a social network much like Facebook, Google+ is now transforming into a more Pinterest-like space.

Earlier this year, Google announced a new direction for Google+, noting the platform was quickly “becoming a place where people engage around their shared interests, with the content and people who inspire them.”

One major change to Google+ at the time was Google+ Photos being moved into the separate Google Photos app.

The new online photo storage and sharing app recently embarked on its #PayWithAPhoto promotional campaign in four cities across the U.S., bringing a unique twist to payments along the way.

In each city the Google Photos food truck provided free local snacks to people who could find a specific photo on their phone that fell into a popular Google Photos search category, such as boat, dog or beach, in under 20 seconds.

Winners of the game got to “pay” for the available snack by showing the matching image they found, engaging participants in friendly competition, while also highlighting the search functionality of Google Photos.
