Twitter is overhauling its user interface with the launch of its new product “Moments,” which provides its readers with a seamless curated experience containing images, videos, Vines and gifs on its Web and mobile platform.
Moments’ interface has been developed to cater to a growing base of time-crunched users for whom following the the right Twitter accounts and browsing through an endless stream of tweets to scavenge and absorb news is not feasible, the company said.
Much like Snapchat Discover, the new interface gathers photos, videos and relevant tweets around a trending news topic or event and presents it in a free-flowing environment that is populated by updates from news outlets, like BuzzFeed, Mashable, Fox News, The Washington Post and The New York Times, and works on getting users attached to the service.
The concept of Moments came from Twitter’s desire to ease up on curating an ideal mix of news in each user’s feed, Andrew Fitzgerald, director of curation at Twitter, told Poynter. “For those of us who are heavy users of Twitter — employees of the company, journalists, politicians, celebrities — we all know it takes a lot of work to curate the perfect home timeline,” he said. “And what we’re hoping to do with Twitter Moments is make that process a little easier for everyone.”
As of now, Twitter is letting users access Moments through a tab next to notifications on the Web or on the navigation bar of its iPhone and Android app.
Moments, with its release coming on the heels of Jack Dorsey’s appointment as the company’s permanent CEO, currently has no revenue stream attached to it. “We are still working on the revenue piece for Moments,” Fitzgerald, who declined to make any further comments on the subject of revenue, told Variety.
The company is reportedly looking into revamping its business and revenue streams with a constant decline in share value dipping its investors’ confidence.
