Ten years ago, there was only one place consumers could get their packages delivered to: their homes. Now, though, it’s not uncommon to go pick up an order in a strategically located Amazon Locker or, as DHL hopes consumers will one day warm up to, their own cars.
Bloomberg is reporting that DHL is launching a pilot program with owners of Daimler AG Smart cars that will allow shoppers to have their packages conveniently and discreetly delivered to their vehicles parked around the streets of Stuttgart. Dubbed “Smart Ready to Drop,” the delivery service will allow shoppers to set a window for couriers, who will have access to a special code to gain access to customers’ cars that expires when said window does, too.
Shoppers will also have the ability to leave unwanted orders in their cars for easy returns.
“We’re planning many other services designed to ease urban life,” Annette Winkler, head of Smart, said in a statement on the program.
While the ball will get rolling in Stuttgart, Cologne, Berlin and four other cities in Germany will enter the fold over the next several months, which could be a very busy time for the country’s parking lots.
