In a press release, American Express Canada said eligible cardmembers enrolled in the Membership Rewards program can access and redeem against eligible spending on purchases in retail, dining and entertainment directly from the Amex app.

“We’re excited to be able to offer our cardmembers the ultimate flexibility when it comes to redeeming their points,” said Megan McKee, VP of consumer card marketing at American Express Canada, said in the press release. “By using their points towards eligible purchases, eligible cardmembers can use their Membership Rewards points simply and conveniently through their Amex app. Whether it’s new furniture for the home or back-to-school shopping or travel, cardmembers have more choice than ever before when it comes to redemption.”

American Express Canada said the new offering is driven by the credit card company’s aim to make the lives of its cardmembers easier. This service is geared toward their mobile-first customers, American Express Canada said. The company noted the Amex app has been revamped and now includes new features, such as using points for purchases, providing more ways to pay and giving customers first access to pre-sales and other exclusive offers.

“We know that consumers are increasingly looking for ways to simplify their busy lives,” McKee added. “With a focus on mobile-first, we’re evolving our commitment to providing exceptional service and making the benefits of cardmembership even more relevant in today’s world.” Some of the areas American Express said it is innovating for the mobile-first customer include offering mobile fraud alerts, providing the ability to review recent transactions on the app and mobile entertainment alerts.
