Barack Obama’s former campaign manager turned Uber exec David Plouffe has been hit with a $90K fine for reportedly illegally lobbying Chicago’s mayor Rahm Emanuel on behalf of Uber. The fine came down care of the city’s Board of Ethics after a series of emails written in 2015 were discovered as part of an unrelated case.
The board found that Plouffe — despite his clear efforts to lobby Emanuel — had not yet registered as a lobbyist when he reached out to Chicago’s mayor about the regulations that govern the car service in and around airports.
Uber was also fined $2,000, according to the Tribune.
“We work hard to ensure our registrations are accurate and up to date,” an Uber spokesperson told Business Insider. “We regret that in this instance we made a mistake and we will comply with the board’s assessment.”
Plouffe is no longer with Uber — he has since moved on to become the head of policy for Mark Zuckerberg’s philanthropy initiative, The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.
He has offered no official comment on the matter.
