Walmart steps up its efforts to bring more groceries to people’s homes through an agreement with Postmates that will expand the company’s Online Grocery Delivery option to more than 40 percent of U.S. households.
In a press release, the companies said Postmates will help power Walmart’s Online Grocery Deliveries starting in Charlotte, North Carolina, and expanding into other markets in the next few months.
“Customers are busy; they are managing jobs, soccer practice, dance lessons and social schedules. So, we are on a mission to do more than keep a little extra money in their pockets,” said Mark Ibbotson, EVP, Central Operations, Walmart U.S., in a press release. “With the help of Postmates, we’re making grocery shopping even easier by bringing the every day low prices of Walmart right to the front door of customers in Charlotte, with more areas to be added soon.”
According to the companies, with the new partnership, Charlotte customers can shop for and have fresh groceries delivered to their homes. Personal shoppers have to complete a training program that runs three weeks in length to learn how to select produce that is fresh and the best cuts of meat for home delivery.
“Both Walmart and Postmates strive to make the lives of our customers easier,” said Dan Mosher, SVP, merchant lead, Postmates, in the same press release. “With our growing fleet of 160,000 couriers, we are confident that we’ll be providing Walmart customers with the ultimate convenience.”
Charlotte customers will have to place their orders online and can then select a delivery window at checkout; they can even opt for same-day service. Walmart’s Online Grocery Delivery has a $9.95 fee with a minimum of $30 for each order. However, customers receive their first delivery free with a coupon code. Walmart also offers an online grocery pickup service for customers who want to shop online but pick up their items in stores.
