Prime Day To Cramp In Store Sales

Prime Day

Amazon’s Prime Day kicks off Monday (July 16) — and if history repeats itself, the 36-hour long shopping event should drive even more consumers to the Internet to carry out their shopping.

According to Foursquare, during the week of Prime Day 2017, physical retailers saw the lowest amount of foot traffic for all of the summer. Foursquare said in a company blog post that it found that all major retail categories saw a decline in foot traffic around Prime day of last year, with some seeing a recovery the week after. Foursquare said it will be keeping an eye on that pattern for this year’s shopping event but is betting that Amazon will drive even more consumers to the web for shopping.

Amazon’s annual Prime Day is coming on Monday next week (July 16), and it’s slated to be yet another massive, global phenomenon. Pretty impressive for new holiday. “Deep discounts and convenience seem to beat out brand loyalty and experiential shopping — and thus, Prime Day does the job,” Foursquare said in the post.

Prime Day will begin on July 16 at 12:00 p.m. PT or 3:00 p.m. ET and will run through July 17. That will give customers 36 hours to shop, six hours longer than the Prime Day in 2017. During the shopping event, Amazon said there will also be deals at all the U.S. Whole Foods Market Stores. As in years past, Prime customers will be able to shop for deals on TVs, smart home devices, toys, clothing and a whole host of other categories. Amazon said Prime Day will feature double the deals on Amazon devices with the largest deals seen on Alexa-enabled products like Echo, Fire TV and Fire tablets.

“Prime members will enjoy a day (and a half) of our best deals, with 36 hours to shop more than one million deals worldwide,” Amazon CEO Worldwide Consumer Jeff Wilke said in the press release. “New this year, members can shop exclusive Prime Day Launches from hundreds of brands worldwide, enjoy exclusive savings at Whole Foods Market and experience surprise entertainment events unboxed from giant Smile boxes in major cities. More than 100 million paid Prime members around the world will find our best Prime Day celebration yet.”
