Visa is jumping back into the online payments game with the launch of Visa Checkout. Instead of a mobile wallet, Visa is essentially offering its online credit card, which is designed to let users pay-and-go at checkout without having to navigate between screens.
It is a similar product to V.me—the online payments product Visa launched in 2011 and pulled back last year, presumably to make way for the launch of checkout. The service allows participating retailers to embed a “pay with Visa” button that allows customers to click, pay and be done. Like V.me, the Checkout service will allow users of non-Visa cards in their Checkout account—but the company does not consider this new product a mobile wallet.
“When you look at the real pain point for consumers … they don’t want a wallet,” Visa senior vice president of digital solutions Sam Shrauger told Venture Beat. “They just want to pay and be done.”
Visa is still signing on merchants. Those participating already include Neiman Marcus, United Airlines Pizza Hut and Staples.
“Staples strives to innovate its e-commerce experience on behalf of our customers, both consumers and b-to-b companies, so they have access to the most bleeding edge digital solutions,” Faisal Masud, executive vice president of global e-commerce, Staples, Inc. said in a released statement. “Adding Visa Checkout will make it easier for them to complete their orders so they can get back to making more happen in their homes or with their business.”
