Amazon One palm-reading checkout technology is reaching more customers as the company begins rolling out the technology at its Whole Foods Market stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
The technology was added to two stores in Dallas on Tuesday (Nov. 8), and it will be added to all 16 Whole Foods locations in the larger Dallas-Fort Worth area over the next few weeks, an Amazon spokesperson told PYMNTS via email.
Amazon One allows consumers to pay by scanning their palms. The palm-print scan verifies their identity and pushes their payment using whatever card they have stored.
Customers at stores equipped with the technology don’t have to fumble with wallets and handbags at the checkout counter, the Amazon spokesperson said in the email.
“Once a customer has enrolled their palm (or both palms) with the Amazon One service and linked their credit/debit card, which takes less than a minute, shopping becomes convenient and fast,” according to the email. “After they are done shopping, customers come to the checkout counter or point of sale, just hover their hand over the Amazon One device and the card linked to their palm will be charged for their purchase.”
In addition to select Whole Foods locations, Amazon One is available at select Amazon Go, Amazon Fresh and Amazon Style stores; Hudson Nonstop Stores at three airports; and concession stores at multiple stadiums and venues, the email said.
Amazon introduced this method of touchless payment at checkout in 2020, saying it would provide less friction, shorter lines and therefore happier customers.
