NextGen Healthcare has unveiled an artificial intelligence (AI) solution designed to interpret patient-provider conversations in real time, providing summarized appointments and documenting care plans.
The new NextGen Ambient Assist delivers AI-generated subjective, objective, assessment and plan (SOAP) notes directly into the electronic health record (EHR), boosting provider efficiency and improving patient care, the provider of healthcare technology solutions said in a Monday (Oct. 9) press release.
SOAP notes have long been used to help providers organize their observations and establish clear outlines for patient care, according to the release. With Ambient Assist, providers using the NextGen Mobile application can save up to two hours of documentation per day, allowing them more time for patient interactions. Within 30 seconds of a completed patient encounter, a SOAP note appears for provider review, created with over 90% accuracy.
David Sides, president and CEO of NextGen Healthcare, said in the release: “Far beyond a transcription service, Ambient Assist is an intelligent ally that helps providers reclaim their time and serve patients more effectively.”
Importantly, Ambient Assist does not make medical judgments or infer medical conditions, according to the press release. Once the provider reviews the note and makes any necessary edits, it integrates into the NextGen Enterprise EHR for inclusion in the patient’s medical records.
Key features of Ambient Assist include its intelligence in recognizing medical acronyms and familiarizing itself with natural, conversational speaking, the release said. The solution is 100% technology-based, eliminating the need for additional personnel. It offers complete automation, removing the necessity of copying and pasting into the EHR. Patient privacy is also prioritized, as audio and transcripts are never stored or saved.
PYMNTS Intelligence has found that generative AI applications for healthcare are being built with the help of investors, technology, resources, expertise and large language models (LLMs) trained with healthcare-specific data. In time, generative AI will sharpen its analysis, improving accuracy in diagnoses and recommended treatments, according to “Generative AI Can Elevate Health and Revolutionize Healthcare,” a PYMNTS Intelligence and AI-ID collaboration.
The launch of Ambient Assist comes about a month after private equity firm Thoma Bravo announced that it had bought NextGen Healthcare and planned to take it private in a deal that put the value of NextGen at $1.8 billion.
Sides said at the time that with the private equity firm as a partner, NextGen “will benefit from increased capital, expertise and strategic flexibility to accelerate the company’s leadership in providing healthcare technology solutions.”
