The threat of a cyberattack or cyberextortion is unabating, particularly among the younger generation. Young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 seem to be the most likely victims of cyberattacks, according to a survey by Zogby Analytics for Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company (HSB). According to Timothy Zeilman, vice president and counsel for HSB, the amount of personal data that is stored on internet-linked devices and home systems is attracting more cybercriminals.
The survey also found that cyberextortion was common, and there are many incidents where victims are coerced into unlocking encoded data. Many victims have costs associated with restoring data or purchasing software following a cyberattack.
Here is the data:
71% | The number of incidents that involved a demand to unlock encrypted data
56% | The percentage of cases where victims spent less than $500
53% | The percentage of cyberextortion victims that refused to pay; 15 percent paid four or more times
33% | The percentage of U.S. consumers who have experienced a virus, hacking or another type of cyberattack in the past 12 months
23% | The percentage of cases where victims of cybercrime had to pay between $1,000 and $5,000
