Hermes, the Parisian luxury brand, will remain focused on craftsmanship but may turn to the metaverse for “communications,” Executive Chairman Axel Dumas told shareholders Wednesday (April 20), according to a Reuters report.
“We are curious and interested” about the metaverse, he said. The report did not elaborate.
The metaverse has been widely described as a simulated world created with digital tools such as virtual reality and augmented reality and sometimes incorporating social media and the blockchain. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, one of its highest-profile cheerleaders — he even named a parent company for Facebook “Meta” — has said the Holy Grail for metaverse expansion will be alternative reality goggles, The Verge reported.
PYMNTS has been publishing a “Metaverse Series” exploring the phenomenon’s implications for various industries. Gaming is emerging as a metaverse frontier, but the article noted: “First and foremost, the technology (for robust metaverse) just isn’t there yet. The virtual headsets required for the truly immersive 3D experience are expensive and not even close to modern games’ standards of graphic user experience. Nor even is the 2D experience available on PCs and mobiles.”

Another article in the series noted the NBA is interested in the metaverse. The article states: “The basketball league is getting itself at least prepped to jump into the metaverse, acquiring a pair of domain names — NBA.eth and theassociationnft.eth on the Ethereum Name Service.”
