A glance at the headlines in payroll this year is to learn that much innovation is happening among FinTechs in the space, particularly as forces from pandemic pressures to personal budgeting bear down on people’s earnings, how they are accessed, when, and where.
Not that you would know it from looking at PYMNTS Provider Ranking of Payroll Apps.
We’re known to go on a bit in this space about the seemingly static nature of certain rankings where powerful brands can occupy chart positions for months at a time.
This is one of those rankings.
Except for the occasional trading of chart positions (there’s one of those in this very edition, as fate would have it), these payroll apps are solid as a rock. That’s certainly a good thing from the serious perspective of reliability in the payments and HR space. It’s just a bit dull to report on.
Forgetting we just said that — let’s do the rankings. Maybe imagine some fireworks.
The Top 5
This is a bit like a song where you know almost all the lyrics. Try it with us and see how you do.
Starting at No. 1 (as good a place as any) the Paychex Flex app holds its place without debate.
At No. 2 it’s Paycor, which raised $425.5 million in its July 2021 IPO. Nice for them.
Steady at No. 3 it’s Alliance MyPay, with its robust digital platform doing all kinds of HR things.
Then, suddenly, something different. Right? We scarcely believe it ourselves.
Moving up one spot from last cycle to No. 4 it’s Square Payroll. Square is everywhere.
That gain pushes dependable Zenefits payroll down one chart position to No. 5 yet keeping the mighty human resource information system (HRIS) platform up among tip-top performers.
The Top 10
No changes below the Top 5 line as the usual characters assume their accustomed spots.
For example, No. 6 is the domain of QuickBooks Payroll for another (pay) cycle.
Ditto the TriNet payroll app for SMBs, appearing at No. 7 like a plane arriving right on time.
At No. 8 once again we’ve got the Rippling app. Corporate card and finance automation platform Ramp recently teamed up with Rippling to streamline onboarding and improve employee spend. The partners say they aim to increase the automation of finance options.
RUN Powered By ADP keeps its chart position at No. 9 for another month.
If nothing changes, then nothing changes. Does that sound like something a guru might say?
We’re just trying it out, because the Payrollguru app is keeping its flat at No. 10 for another cycle and we want to get in the spirit. Now go away so we can meditate about payday.
