MasterCard: How To Avoid Canada’s EMV Mistakes

There are no surprises at this point: EMV is coming to the United States, and most acquirers should have a pretty firm grasp on what will be needed to complete the transition.

But that doesn’t mean it’ll be easy. And if recent history is any indication, there will be plenty of opportunities for American companies to make a misstep when bringing their clients on board for the EMV transition.

Phillip Miller is the lead author on a new white paper from MasterCard Advisors, titled, “EMV for U.S. Acquirers: Seven Guiding Principles for EMV Readiness.” The paper essentially provides acquirers with a rollout checklist, to help those companies avoid mistakes made in other nations. For example, Miller points to an instance in Canada, where an acquirer had to re-deploy its terminal network shortly after flipping the on switch, because it had failed to comply with every payment network’s standards.
