Apple’s retail presence is going to have a different look.
The consumer electronics giant is adding new features to its stores, Fortune reported Wednesday (Sept. 2), which will help transform at least some of the stores’ appearances. The process has begun with a “next generation” retail store in Memphis, Tennessee, with a new location opening up in that city.
As Fortune noted, there will be some different materials used in decoration, including granite, oak and even plants. The signature glass panel motif is staying, however. But the shop that is going up at that Memphis-based Shops of Saddle Creek mall will also sport a “matte granite reinforced panel on the exterior wall” that differs from previous architecture, and for the interior, there will be a changeable display in store that will feature plants, oak furniture and also artwork.
Fortune reported the “rumors” of a new Apple Store design had been growing in the wake of a New Yorker magazine profile on the company’s chief design officer, Jony Ive, who hinted that a new approach to retail might be in the offing. And none other than company CEO Tim Cook has said that the CDO post has expanded to include overseeing a refresh of the retail concept.
“Our project is the next generation of retail store that we’re rolling out, and that’s the design concept that we have — and we’re really excited because this is going to be one of the first, if it’s approved, that we build,” said Apple Senior Director of Development Rick Millitello to the Germantown Design Review Commission, according to Fortune.
After a fall 2015 launch at the Memphis location, some of the new retail initiatives are expected to debut overseas, the financial publication said.
