OpenAI is reportedly set to introduce updates next month aimed at making its artificial intelligence (AI) models more affordable and efficient for developers.
The company’s goal is to address the concern of high costs associated with the models and attract more companies to use the technology, Reuters reported Thursday (Oct. 12), citing unnamed sources.
OpenAI did not immediately reply to PYMNTS’ request for comment.
One of the updates includes the addition of memory storage to OpenAI’s developer tools, according to the report. The enhancement has the potential to reduce costs for application makers by up to 20 times, a move that is crucial for OpenAI as it seeks to support partners in building sustainable businesses centered around AI software.
In addition to the memory storage update, OpenAI plans to unveil new tools with vision capabilities, the report said. The tools will enable developers to build applications that can analyze and describe images.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has expressed his desire to create a new ecosystem based on the company’s models, which are already being used in various applications, per the report. OpenAI aims to encourage companies to leverage its technology to build AI-powered chatbots and autonomous agents capable of performing tasks without human involvement.
The updates are expected to be announced at OpenAI’s inaugural developer conference in San Francisco Nov. 6, according to the report. The updates, including offerings called “stateful API” and “vision API,” are specifically designed to attract more developers to pay for access to OpenAI’s models and empower them to build their own AI software for various purposes.
While OpenAI has achieved success with its ChatGPT chatbot, attracting developers to build businesses using its technology has proven challenging, the report said.
There has been interest in AI startups from investors, with over $20 billion invested this year, per the report.
Meanwhile, Microsoft, a company that has partnered with and invested in OpenAI, is working to reduce the costs associated with integrating OpenAI’s technology by creating its own AI software. Microsoft aims to develop AI at a lower cost while maintaining the same quality as the models of OpenAI.
