Customers of Amazon’s Italian eCommerce site will be able to make purchases with Bancomat Pay, following the retailer’s new partnership with Nexi.
In the collaboration between the two companies, Amazon.it will use Nexi’s platform to enable customers to make purchases with this additional payment option, Nexi said in a Tuesday (July 2) press release.
Bancomat Pay offers customers a payment option at checkout that is convenient, simple and secure, according to the release.
“The agreement with Amazon.it demonstrates, once again, how Nexi’s international scale and strong local presence make it the ideal choice for global players who need to have partners with a solid positioning in local markets,” Filippo Signoretti, merchant solutions director of Nexi Italy, said in the release.
Bancomat Pay is the mobile and online payment solution of Italy’s interbank network Bancomat, which operates a domestic card scheme and many of the country’s ATMs.
The mobile app allows users to connect their bank accounts and telephone numbers and make peer-to-peer payments directly from one account to another.
For merchants wanting to accept electronic payments, Bancomat Pay provides a cheaper alternative to cards.
PYMNTS Intelligence found in late 2022 that 42.2% of Italians reported using a mobile wallet to pay for their last online purchase. That percentage was the second highest after Germany, where 44.2% of respondents used one for their last eCommerce transaction.
In addition, 20.4% of Italian consumers reported paying for their last in-store purchase using a mobile wallet, according to “How the World Does Digital: Different Paths to Digital Transformation.”
In another recent product launch, it was reported in May that Nexi now enables merchants in Italy to process payments using their iPhones. The company already offered business owners this option for Android operating systems through the NexiSoftPOS application
In March, Nexi chose Mastercard to help it support open banking account-based payments throughout Europe, saying this partnership will facilitate eCommerce payments across Nexi’s gateways serving merchants across the continent.
“Together, Mastercard and Nexi will build an integrated digital payment ecosystem by advancing Mastercard Open Banking-powered solutions that offer secure, seamless payment experiences with more choice for consumers when shopping online,” the companies said in a press release announcing their partnership.
