Stripe Offers Its Terminal to UK, EU Businesses

The payments infrastructure FinTech Stripe has made its Terminals available in five European countries, offering customers a physical version of its digital service.

According to a company news release, companies like Shopify, Taxi.de and Indy Cinema Group are using Terminal to provide in-person payments for shoppers in Ireland, Germany, France, the Netherlands and the U.K.

“The expansion of Stripe Terminal will mean that more of our merchants can manage in-person and online payments through Shopify, streamlining their workflows to provide a greater consumer experience,” said Shimona Mehta, managing director, EMEA at Shopify.

Stripe’s Terminal, which has been available in the U.S. since 2019, is made up of three components. First, there’s a set of SDKs and APIs that can provide a “fully custom” checkout through the web or via mobile apps, “allowing for a single integration to power payments globally.”

Secondly, Stripe says pre-certified card readers can also work with Europay, Mastercard and Visa contact/contactless cards, as well as mobile wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Finally, the terminal offers fleet management features for overseeing hardware at scale across more than one location or through connected accounts.

“Over the last decade, it’s become much easier to accept in-person or online payments. But as soon as you want to do both, it would get complex and challenging,” said Matt Henderson, EMEA business lead at Stripe. “The expansion of Stripe Terminal means businesses in Europe and around the world can easily unify their in-person and online payments experiences.”

The rollout comes a little less than a month after Stripe formed a partnership with the buy now, pay later (BNPL) company Klarna, allowing millions of online businesses in the U.S. and Europe to offer Klarna‘s installment payments.

As part of the arrangement, Stripe users can offer Klarna as a payment option, while Klarna will use Stripe to accept payments from customers in Canada and the U.S.
