New York City’s Department of Finance has unveiled self-service payment kiosks for customers at its business centers in the Bronx and Queens.

The department announced the launch of the kiosks in a news release Tuesday (Feb. 8), saying they were provided by government and utility payment technology firm CityBase to create a better experience for customers, cut down on foot traffic and wait times and reduce person-to-person contact during the pandemic.

The program gives customers the option to pay parking tickets with cash, check, or card, without added service fees. Each transaction takes less than a minute on average, with instructions in both English and Spanish.

“We are introducing these payment kiosks to promote convenience and access for all New Yorkers, especially those who need to pay in cash and have limited alternatives,” said Preston Niblack, commissioner of the New York City Department of Finance. “Our plan is to expand our kiosk coverage citywide in 2022. We chose CityBase for this initiative for their experience as a leading provider of government payment kiosks.”

Mike Duffy, CEO of CityBase, said the kiosks will provide “a more convenient experience for some of their most financially vulnerable customers by empowering them to pay their bills on their terms, with no predatory third-party service fees.”

The launch of these kiosks comes as New York City is exploring other forms of contactless payments. As we reported recently, the city’s transit authority is set to launch a four-month pilot program of a new fare collection system beginning March 1.

Riders will be able to use the tap-and-pay One Metro New York (OMNY) system to access discounted fares normally offered to riders who paid for weekly or monthly passes upfront. Riders will now be able to pay as they go, with fares limited to $33 per week. Once riders reach that cap, rides become unlimited.
