If you’ve ever seen an item of clothing online in a photo or video and wanted to know who makes it and where to buy it, there is now an app for that.
Geenee allows Instagram users to recognize an item seen in a photo on the platform and then help them with shopping for that item. Currently with both iOS and Android capabilities, the app is free to download and is a futuristic, almost on-demand way of spotting something and shopping for it.
Users have the app running simultaneously when they access Instagram. When they’re in the photo platform, the user takes snapshots of photos, which are then filtered through Geenee’s technology to recognize what the items are. Geenee will send back a notification of possible items and where they can be purchased. Perfect matches aren’t guaranteed, but similar alternatives are provided — including the brand, the SKU and where it can be purchased.
The app launched at the beginning of the month and has already raised more than $4.4 million in a Series A funding. Geenee is, at this point, a fashion discovery app — though founder Thorsten Magers notes that he believes its services could work across verticals.
