Auction site eBay has announced the expansion of its authentication service to include luxury jewelry.
Launched last year, eBay Authenticate is a service that allows buyers to shop online for legitimate luxury handbags and wallets. Sellers can list designer products valued at more than $500 to receive 80 percent of the final selling price when the bags are from any of 12 high-end brands, including Balenciaga, Burberry, Céline, Chanel, Christian Dior, Fendi, Goyard, Gucci, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Prada and Valentino.
The eBay Authenticate program was created to help buyers shop with confidence, especially as fake luxury brands have been a problem online.
“We’re making it even easier for our buyers to shop quickly and confidently for luxury handbags,” said Laura Chambers, vice president of consumer selling at eBay, at the time of the launch. “With tens of thousands of high-end handbags currently available, eBay is primed to boost customer confidence in selling and shopping for an amazing selection of designer merchandise. We also believe our sellers will love this service, as it provides them with a white glove service when selling luxury handbags. We’re looking forward to expanding this program to other brands and categories next year.”
The service expanded into the luxury watches category earlier this year, and will now offer shoppers more than 45,000 high-end diamond and other gemstone jewelry. All necklaces, earrings, rings and bracelets are marked with an “Authenticity Verified” label. The items range in price from $250 to more than $20,000, and are verified by third-party authentication experts and sourced from more than two dozen of eBay’s top-rated sellers.
“eBay is home to the largest selection of luxury goods, which includes tens of thousands of jewelry items, fine watches and rare and designer handbags,” said James Hendy, senior director of eBay Authenticate, in a press release. “Expanding the eBay Authenticate service provides customers [with] an added layer of trust and confidence as they shop for fine jewelry this holiday and beyond.”
To celebrate the launch, eBay is offering special deals and discounts on select authenticated jewelry items.
