Epic Games Introduces Xbox, PS5 Fortnite Crew Subscription

Epic Games is rolling out a new monthly subscription service — Fortnite Crew — for Xbox and Playstation gaming systems, timed with the Dec. 2 release of Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 5 update.

Fortnite Crew is advertised as a one-stop-shop for players to get exclusive, members-only outfits and accessories every month.

“The subscription offers a monthly deal for players who get more virtual goods than they would ordinarily get with a seasonal Battle Pass,” Matt Grandstaff, community lead of Fortnite, said in a statement on Wednesday (Nov. 25).

The North Carolina-headquartered company was valued at $17.3 billion with an August fundraise of $1.78 billion. That round included a $250 million strategic investment from Sony. As of May, Epic Games reported that it had over 350 million registered Fortnite players. 

“Having the support of leaders in the financial community accelerates Epic’s efforts to build a new kind of digital ecosystem using real-time 3D technology, services that connect hundreds of millions of people, and a digital storefront that offers a fair business model,” Tim Sweeney, founder and chief executive officer, said in a statement about the fundraise.

The $12 monthly subscription includes access to the current season’s Battle Pass, 1,000 bonus V-bucks, and a crew-members-only new outfit bundle with a matching accessory. The December subscription will be Galaxia, “all-new Outfit and Style plus the Cosmic Llamacorn Pickaxe and Fractured World Back Bling,” Epic Games said in a statement.

Fortnite’s current season started in August and is scheduled to end with a live event on Dec. 1, The Verge reported. 

Epic Games and Apple could be headed to trial next year over the future of Fortnite on iOS. Apple blocked the game in August over a new update that gave players the ability to go around Apple’s proprietary in-app payment system. Epic has been vocal about Apple’s 30 percent commission on in-app gaming purchases.

To get Fortnite back on iOS, Nvidia started using the GeForce Now cloud gaming service that runs on Safari.

Earlier this month, Disney+ partnered with Fortnite, offering two free months through the end of 2020. Gamers who make purchases in Fortnite will have access to the deal.
