Retail giant Amazon is expanding its Same-Day Delivery service to three new metro areas, including Atlanta, Miami and Minneapolis, and expanding the offering in Chicago, the company said in a blog post Thursday (Sept. 23).
The company also announced that, as part of the Same-Day Delivery expansion, it will be hiring hundreds of full- and part-time employees to keep up with the demand it’s likely to create.
“At Amazon, we’re always thinking about how we can empower our employees to succeed and thrive,” according to the blog post. “This principled commitment to our employees drives everything that we do as an organization.
“We know that for some of our employees in the U.S., one of the most important things we can offer is flexibility in how they approach their work schedules — the opportunity to balance a well-paying job with other personal commitments,” the blog post says.
Same-Day Delivery workers are based in Amazon’s mini-fulfillment centers, which are scattered across the country close to where the expedited delivery service is offered. That means employees can have flexible schedules, the company said.
Amazon launched Faster Same-Day Delivery more than a year ago and it now includes Prime members in more than a dozen U.S. cities, who can get their items in as little as five hours. The fast deliveries are also environmentally friendly because the products are closer to the customers, Amazon’s blog post says.
“At Amazon, we take our responsibility as an employer seriously,” according to the blog post. “We recognize that not all employees need or want a full-time job—some may be looking for part-time work or a flex schedule. We welcome all of these schedule needs at Amazon and we’re proud that we continue to find ways to offer it at scale in facilities across the U.S.”

Last month, Amazon also added Baltimore, Charlotte, Chicago, Detroit, Houston and Tampa to the Same-Day Delivery roll call, joining Dallas, Nashville, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Orlando and Washington, D.C.
Same-Day Delivery customers can order items for delivery throughout the day, including at midnight for overnight delivery. The service is free to eligible Prime members on qualifying orders of more than $35. Most orders are delivered within hours, but the fastest one so far happened in 22 minutes in Dallas.
