Amazon is expanding its A-to-z Guarantee to better protect customers “in the unlikely event” a product sold through Amazon.com causes property damage or personal injury, whether the product comes directly from Amazon or one of its resellers.
Under the expanded A-to-z Guarantee, which Amazon created more than 20 years ago to help customers have hassle-free returns, the retail behemoth will pay customers directly starting Sept. 1 for claims of less than $1,000, which Amazon says is about 80 percent of the cases it encounters.
Amazon may also directly pay for claims of more than $1,000 if the seller is unresponsive or if Amazon believes the claim is valid.
“By standing behind customers and the products in our store, regardless of who sells them, Amazon is going far beyond our legal obligations and what any other marketplace service provider is doing today to protect customers,” Amazon said in its announcement Tuesday (Aug. 10).
The company is also unveiling Amazon Insurance Accelerator to help sellers buy product liability insurance for their businesses.
“With our expanded A-to-z Guarantee, we’re proud to continue providing customers peace of mind every time they shop in our store and to help our sellers increase sales and grow their businesses,” Amazon said in today’s announcement.

Amazon recently reported $113 billion in net sales over the three months ending June 30, an increase of 27 percent over the same period last year but still slightly below analysts’ expectations of $115 billion. Net product sales accounted for $58 billion, while net service sales accounted for $55 billion in the second quarter of 2021.
In the last 18 months, Chief Financial Officer Brian Olsavsky said, Amazon’s entire fulfillment network has nearly doubled in size. The number of products being fulfilled by Amazon has doubled in the past two years, and the delivery arm of the fulfillment business has more than doubled.
