Online coupon platform Groupon and financial services company Square on Friday (Nov. 5) unveiled a collaboration that allows local merchants to use Square’s App Marketplace to launch marketing campaigns on Groupon.
The Groupon-Square partnership also lets Beauty and Wellness and Things to Do sellers on Square use Square Appointments for Groupon rollouts.
“We’re laser-focused on improving the merchant experience, and by teaming up with Square, we are creating a new ecosystem that will make it easier than ever for the local businesses that use Square to launch new campaigns on Groupon,” said Groupon Chief Commercial Officer Brian Fields in the joint announcement.
“In addition, this partnership is aligned with our goals to lower merchant acquisition costs through self-service, expand inventory and improve the merchant and customer experiences,” he said. “We’re excited to explore other opportunities in the future with Square to help local merchants.”
This is the latest move as part of Groupon’s growth strategy, following its push for more self-service merchant capabilities, a new North American user experience that shows off its expanded inventory and the Grab Life by the Groupon campaign to make the brand the go-to destination for local experiences.
“By partnering with Groupon, Square is providing sellers with access to the tools they need to promote their businesses, attract new customers and increase sales,” said Willem Ave, GM of Square Appointments, in the joint announcement.
Earlier this week, Groupon announced that users will be able to access deals on Google Pay in 2022. In August, Groupon also teamed with beauty and wellness appointment app Booksy to make it easier to book appointments with salons, spas and other services providers.

“Square’s Booking API enables businesses to unlock a new, integrated channel to drive round-the-clock bookings, while also offering enhanced customer experiences to buyers who can now seamlessly purchase and book appointments, all from one place,” Ave said.
All U.S.-based Square merchants can connect directly to Groupon through their Square accounts. The companies are working on expanding the offering to other countries and adding more types of businesses to the initiative.
