Target said in a blog post on Tuesday (Oct. 5) that it will pay hourly employees in its stores, service centers and supply chain positions — along with some workers in the headquarters and seasonal employees — a $2 hourly bonus for each hour they work during the peak of the 2021 holiday shopping rush.
“This team continues to be at the heart of our strategy,” Chief Human Resources Officer Melissa Kremer wrote in a note to Target employees. “You have shown up consistently for our guests and one another with a tremendous amount of care, and we know this busy holiday season will be no different. This is just one more way of expressing our deep gratitude for your significant contributions.”
Target store and service center employees will earn an extra $2 per for each hour worked every Saturday and Sunday from Nov. 20 through Dec. 19, plus Friday, Dec. 24 and Sunday, Dec. 26. Supply chain employees will earn the hourly bonus for each hour worked within a two-week period specified by location from Oct. 10 to Dec. 18.
Target is offering current employees an additional five million hours this holiday season, which means they’ll likely earn more than $75 million in pay. The retailer plans to hire 100,000 seasonal employees and 30,000 more in its supply chain facilities across the country, many of whom may be offered positions after the holiday season is over.

Target isn’t the only major company working to overcome labor shortages and supply chain snafus heading into the holiday season. DHL Supply Chain expects to hire 20% more seasonal workers this year over last year, is offering higher hourly pay and is adding collaborative robots to assist with order picking. Also, Walmart expects to hire 20,000 people for its supply chain operations.
