The Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming segment of play and entertainment company Hasbro Inc. made significant gains in 2021, even as COVID-19 restrictions were lifted and people were allowed to be together in person more regularly than they had been in 2020.
Wizards of the Coast and digital gaming revenues were up 42% for 2021, part of an overall 17% jump in net revenues for the company up to $6.42 billion, the company reported Monday (Feb. 7).
For the year, the entertainment segment of the business was up 27%, while revenue for Hasbro’s consumer products segment was up 9%.
In the fourth quarter of 2021, Hasbro’s net revenues were up 17% to $2.01 billion, while the entertainment segment of the business jumped 54% for the final three months of the year. The Wizards of the Coast and digital gaming segment revenues jumped 18% for the year’s closing quarter, while the consumer products division were up 9%.
“Fans and consumers are increasingly interacting with brands in more ways than ever,” Rich Stoddart, Hasbro interim chief executive officer, said in the announcement. “Our unique set of strategic assets across toys and games, entertainment, digital gaming and licensing provide the foundation for maximizing the value of both our existing franchises and new IP.”
Hasbro’s total gaming portfolio revenue, which includes Magic: The Gathering and Monopoly, grew 19% for the year to $2.1 billion. This was the fourth consecutive year of growth for Magic: The Gathering, which has seen revenue increase 12 of 13 years.
Dungeons & Dragons revenue was up for the ninth straight year and digital gaming revenue was up 36% for 2021.
The launch of My Little Pony: A New Generation led to more than 100% growth in the toy and game point of sale for the fourth quarter of the year.
“Long-term investments in our brands and capabilities have built a differentiated business with diversified capabilities to drive long-term profitable growth and enhance shareholder value,” said Hasbro CFO Deborah Thomas.

Wizards of the Coast and digital gaming division leader Chris Cocks will be Hasbro’s next chief executive officer, starting Feb. 25. CEO Brian Goldner died in October.
