Clik2pay Enables Shopify Online Merchants to Accept Debit Payments

Clik2pay now enables Shopify online merchants to accept payments directly from Canadian customers’ bank accounts.

This direct-from-account payment option gives Canadian consumers the choice of using a payment method other than a credit card and enables online merchants to expand their customer base, reduce payment processing fees and receive real-time payments, Clik2pay said in a Tuesday (Jan. 17) press release emailed to PYMNTS.

“Customers love paying by debit card in-store,” Clik2pay founder and CEO Mike Bradley said in the release. “Now businesses can give them the same experience online by accepting Clik2pay.”

PYMNTS research has found that millennials and members of Generation Z tend to prefer to use debit as a payment method rather than credit.

These consumers were most impacted by financial crises like the Great Recession and the pandemic. They are wary of debt and have therefore been slow to build their credit scores, according to “The Next-Gen Debit Tracker,” a PYMNTS and Pulse Network collaboration.

Debit cards help these consumers spend only what they have, the report said.

Debit has clear advantages for users who want to spend what they have on hand and not expose themselves to more debt, Pulse Network Executive Vice President Steve Sievert told PYMNTS in an interview posted in 2020.

“Debit has long been consumers’ preferred form of payment,” Sievert said at the time, adding that the growth rate of debit use has been consistent over at least the last decade and a half and that many users of debit appreciate its pay-as-you-go aspect, convenience and trusted security.

With Clik2pay on Shopify, payments are completed using the Interac e-Transfer money transfer system. Clik2pay also provides end-to-end payment tracking, real-time notifications, status updates and complete settlement files, according to the press release.

Online merchants can implement this option by signing up for Clik2Pay, adding the app on Shopify and completing their account, the release said.

“Adding the new Clik2pay app to a Shopify store is as simple as drag and drop — and gives businesses a smooth, fast and secure process to enable payment from all customers — not just the ones with credit cards,” Bradley said in the release.
