Walmart Will Hire 50K in the US

Walmart announced Wednesday (March 16) plans to hire more than 50,000 U.S. workers in the first quarter of this year to strengthen its stores and fulfillment centers.

According to an announcement on the company website, the giant retailer said the new workers would take on roles Walmart stores, clubs, campuses and supply chain facilities.

The company’s average hourly rate in the U.S. is $16.40 an hour, with starting wages going to $30 an hour for some roles and in some markets, Chief People Officer Donna Morris wrote in the blog post.

Walmart said it hired 5,500 pharmacists or pharmacy managers, more than 13,000 pharmacy technicians and close to 4,500 truck drivers in 2021. Last year also saw the retail giant announce plans to hire 150,000 new workers for its store in the U.S., most of them to permanent positions.

This news comes a day after Walmart Global Tech announced plans to hire more than 5,000 employees during this fiscal year as it adds hubs in Toronto and Atlanta.

Global Tech is the fastest-growing corporate team at Walmart, Suresh Kumar, the company’s EVP, chief technology officer and chief development officer, said on the blog.

The group “develops and manages the foundational technologies on which customer experiences are built,” Kumar said, including cloud, data, enterprise architecture, DevOps, infrastructure and security.

Walmart Global Tech has more than 20,000 associates worldwide and is hoping to hire cybersecurity professionals, software engineers, developers data scientists and engineers, architects, product managers and technical program managers.

Walmart said it plans to add several hundred tech jobs in Toronto, beginning with 45 full-time associates, including software developers, product managers and technical program managers. In addition, Walmart Canada is investing $1 billion in technology and refurbishing local stores.
